When people ask AI,
does it mention you?

More and more people ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity to recommend a business rather than searching for one. I measure how often those platforms recommend you, find out who they're recommending instead, and fix the things on your site that stop them understanding who you are and what you do.

Businesses who rely on being found, and have started to wonder what happens when somebody skips Google and asks an AI instead. If a customer types "can you recommend a good accountant in Cardiff" into ChatGPT, you want to know whether your name comes back, and if it doesn't, whose does.

It also suits anyone whose traffic has started dipping for no obvious reason. Google's AI summaries now sit on top of a lot of searches, and fewer people click through to a website at all. Being the business the summary mentions matters more than it used to.

It starts with a benchmark, run through Mention Meter, a tool I built to do this properly rather than by hand. Then it moves on to the fixes.

  • A set of real-world questions your customers would ask, run three times each against ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, because AI answers change from one run to the next
  • A record of who gets recommended for each question, so you can see exactly which competitors are being named ahead of you
  • A crawl of your site for the things that confuse machines, like missing structured data, unhelpful alt text and broken character encoding
  • A check for contradictions, such as two versions of your company name or "over 10 years' experience" on one page and "established 2002" on another
  • The fixes themselves, made on your site rather than handed over as a to-do list
  • A second scan about six weeks later, so you can see what's actually changed

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimisation, which is essentially SEO for AI answers. A lot of it overlaps with good SEO, and most of the fixes help with Google as well, but AI platforms are a lot less forgiving of mixed messages. If your site says two different things, they'll often just recommend somebody whose story is clearer.

I tried it on my own site first and found I was invisible in all but one unbranded question. I wrote up what I found and what I changed in I Asked ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity To Recommend a Web Developer in Cardiff.

How it works

Nobody can promise an AI will recommend you, and you should be wary of anyone who does. What I can do is measure where you stand, fix what's holding you back and measure again.

01. The questions

We agree on the questions your customers actually ask, from "who builds Shopify sites in Wales" to questions that name you directly. Usually around twenty five of them.

02. The benchmark

Every question gets run three times on each of the five main AI platforms. You get your appearance rate and share of voice, and a list of who's being recommended instead of you.

03. The audit

I crawl your site and look at it the way a machine does, checking structured data, alt text, encoding, naming and any facts that contradict each other. Then I compare it against the competitors who came out on top.

04. The fixes

I make the changes myself rather than leaving you with a report. Where something sits outside your website, like an old business listing under a previous name, I'll tell you where it is and how to sort it.

05. The wait

AI platforms take a while to catch up with changes, so we give it around six weeks. Meanwhile I keep an eye on Search Console and analytics, since a lot of these fixes help with Google too.

06. The re-scan

The same questions on the same platforms, so you get a straight before and after comparison and can see what's actually moved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Some things people often ask me:

Can you guarantee AI will recommend my business?
No, and nobody honestly can. AI answers vary from one run to the next and the platforms change how they work all the time. What I can do is measure where you stand, remove the things that put the platforms off, and show you the difference with a second scan.
What's the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO is about ranking in search results. GEO, Generative Engine Optimisation, is about being the business an AI names in its answer. They overlap a lot, and most of the fixes help with both, but AI platforms are much less forgiving of mixed messages and missing information.
Which AI platforms do you check?
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. Between them, that covers the vast majority of people asking an AI for a recommendation.
Does my website need to be built by you?
No. I've done this on WordPress, Shopify and custom builds. As long as I can get access to make the changes, or work alongside whoever looks after your site, it's fine.
How long before I see a difference?
Give it around six weeks. AI platforms don't pick up changes overnight, which is why the re-scan is booked in for later rather than straight after the fixes go live.
